This is a Chicago Channel 2 news video of Wayne Kusy building a 25 foot model of the Queen Mary in his small Rogers Park Chicago apartment. So big is it, that he has no furniture! Plus it is made of 814,000 toothpicks! and 8 years to build. And he still has time to play in a band. Rock on! For more ships go to www.WayneKusy.com

QM2 is an …
QM2 is an oceanliner, purpose-built for crossing the Atlantic – the first liner to be built since the 1960’s – the QE2 was the last before her. Mickey Arison wanted a liner & to recreate the “Golden Age of Travel”. Cunard’s Queen Victoria & new Queen Elizabeth (2010) are cruise ships – QV was originally going to be a Princess ship then was delivered as QV. I wouldn’t want to cross on them.

I am pretty up on Cunard. But that is interesting about Cruise ships. I thought the QM2 was a cruise ship??!!

Also – if ships & …
Also – if ships & cruising/crossing interests you – read about the history of Cunard – it is very interesting – & the QM2 is a harkening back to the days of the original Queen Mary – when the schedule must be kept – regardless of what Mother Nature was doing.

Definitely – Also, …
Definitely – Also, monetarily the cost is significant. The QM2 liner MUST maintain a very punishing schedule & they use the North Atlantic to cross (6 days, 30 times a year or more) while cruise ships must cross the calmer South Atlantic (10-12 days, twice a year). QM2 has sheltered balconies to the 7th deck, the hull is reinforced, the shape of the whole ship is streamlined to cut the waves. She has to withstand 50ft + seas – with no ports nearby for a detour & even carries extra propellers.

Really, that is …
Really, that is interesting! So you are saying the ocean liners are better structurally built?
January 31st, 2010 at 9:40 pm
Actually, yes it is …
Actually, yes it is. The QM2 is an ocean liner; the Oasis is not – it is a cruise ship, and it would never be able to maintain a punishing transatlantic schedule as the QM2 does.
