take the 4 straws and insert their ends into each other and make a square out of them.
take the other straws and make ribs to to support the foil in a bowl like shape, use strips of foil to tie the ribs to the square frame, cover it all with a solid piece of foil.

Kayak trip down Missouri river?

My buddy and I are wanting to plan a kayak trip down the missouri river. The plan is to start in Kansas city, mo and ending in st charles Missouri. I know people have done it before. But I don’t want to overlook anything. How many miles is the trip? How long would it take? Any advice maybe personal experiences? What’s the river like between kc and stl? I only see it from the bridges and banks.

I have not paddled the Missouri but here are some tips on doing a trek.
1- Self examination : Are you proficient enough with paddling skills, self rescue techniques and navigation skills to do a trip even if it is down river.
2- Look at your route plan is it realistic, a competent paddler will paddle between 12-20 miles a day. Check out the maps,Google Earth and as well any maps you can before creating your float plan. Check weather data at least for the previous two weeks and for the duration of your journey. The National Weather Service has an excellent archive resource. Look at satellite imagery both in you immediate area and the national weather projections. Check with local outfitters who run river trips and get their advice and watch indicators for river levels.
3-Devise a float plan, in this you list where you plan to put in and to take out, you include information as to local rescue and law enforcement agencies, List the type of equipment you are using in detail colour size, type, boat type color and complete description. IF you are planning to take a cellphone take a spare battery, and put them in a small drybag attached to your boat. List the type of emergency equipment you are carrying, first aid kit, light survival kit . As accurately and realistically as possible list the sites where you will over night and stops along the way. Give yourself some leeway as to arrival at the take out, perhaps as much as a day . But if you are going to miss a deadline be sure to contact the person youleft the float plan with via cellphone.
A device I carry when I paddle solo or on treks is known as "SPOT" ( you can check it out at findmespot.com )its a worthy investment, and your family and friends can share your adventure with the tracking feature, as well it allows them to see where you are on your journey using Google maps. I bought the device and the features package and the device comes with an emergency signal that immediately notifies rescue and starts the process immediately.
4- Check your boat and your equipment, make sure its in perfect or near perfect condition, Your PFD is a constant and should be worn all the time when on water. When you make landfall take your boat to the high ground away from the shore.
I could go on for quite awhile but having made a 1128 mile solo trek by kayak and several smaller treks the important thing is to self evaluate, have the proper boat, equipment and to study every available resource you have. Check to see if there are resupply points close to the water. At the end of the day make your camp as high and as far from the water as possible . Rain storms upstream or dam releases all figure into the equation of a safe trek.
